Reflection: Checks for Understanding Masking Fear: A Focus on Setting in Poe's "Masque of the Red Death" - Section 3: Understanding Setting: Mapping the Madness of Prospero's Palace


In which I take note of student observations on the setting. It's worth addressing that with both of the recorded designs, students either figured out, or I directed them to realize, the maps they were drawing would not completely work, based on the description in the text. This is the primary reason I will add "label the map with direct quotes" to the assignment next year.

Big Idea: The setting of "Masque of the Red Death" reflects the themes of the piece: time is fleeting, madness takes its toll.
