Reflection: Student Ownership THE CANTERBURY TALES: Wife of Bath Day 4 of 4 - Section 3: Small-Group Discussion: Wife of Bath - Feminist, Control Freak, or ???


As a teacher, at times I feel guilty about not spending enough individual time with students to check their understanding. Since I teach Seniors, I like to have them engage in small-group discussion so that they can get individual time to voice their opinions and clarify possible misunderstandings about a text with a safe, small-group setting with their peers, where they are more likely to take risks. I normally circulate and monitor group progress; however, when initially implementing this lesson, we did not have a chance to debrief as a class.

In my last class of the day, after the small-group discussion, we set up in seminar form to debrief.  I had a student videotape part of this discussion, but the students were a bit shy to admit their true feelings about the Wife of Bath on camera.  You will see a small-bit of the debriefing, but the real magic happened after the camera went off (doesn't it always...)

I was able to hear from all students in this setting, checking their understanding.  They were also asking one another prompting questions to cause their classmates to defend their opinions.  I will implement the seminar format again.
