Reflection: Intervention and Extension Reading Strategy: Looking at the Whole Word - Section 4: Student Practice


Most fourth graders that are not reading on grade level have trouble with decoding. They spend so much time decoding that they lose comprehension. Although this lesson seems like something they should know how to do, struggling readers might not have had a chance to practice this strategy.

When I conference with these readers they try to hard to sound out each part of a big word. This strategy is a good beginning so that they can then move to looking for word chunks next.

Objective: SWBAT use knowledge of phonics to decode unknown words to obtain fluency.

Big Idea: Fourth graders can decode big words by returning to their reading roots of using decoding. This lesson gives the name to a strategy that they have used and now asking them to use it to make sure they maintain reading accuracy.
