Objective

SWBAT create a 4 square writing graphic organizer and write paragraph 1 of 5 of an opinion essay which analyzes the themes and examines the author's approach to growing up in the book Bud, Not Buddy.

Big Idea

Students will use a 4 square writing graphic organizer to analyze the themes in Bud, Not Buddy and examine the author's approach to growing up and begin to write a 5 paragraph opinion essay.

Motivation

9 minutes

I explain to my scholars that today we will complete a four square writing graphic organizer and write our 1st of 5 paragraphs as we examine themes in the book Bud, Not Buddy, as well as examine the author's approach to growing up.  The writing process involves pre-writing, drafting, peer review, revising, editing, and publishing. Next, we watch a short Brainpop video on the writing process and take the short quiz afterward.  (Click here to watch video.)  I like to use this Brainpop video because it provides an engaging audio-visual on the writing process, how to write a great beginning, and how to organize a piece of writing.

Guided Practice

15 minutes

I explain to my students that they will use their four square graphic organizer to plan to write an opinion essay about themes in the book Bud, Not Buddy (see attached writing prompt on Powerpoint resource).  I display the attached four square graphic organizer on the SmartBoard and review what information goes in each box.  In the box in the center, we'll develop a topic sentence which states the main idea.  In the box on the top left, we'll develop a sentence which states 1 theme examined in the book Bud, Not Buddy.  I explain to them that every student will select his or her own theme on which to focus their writing.  Now, under that sentence, I ask my students to list 3 pieces of evidence of that theme in the book. 

Independent Practice

30 minutes

Next, I ask my scholars to fill in 2 more themes and 3 pieces of evidence in the box on the top right and bottom left.  In the last box on the bottom right, they are to develop a conclusion and 3 pieces of evidence.  Throughout the guided and independent portions of the lesson, I am using the "I do," "We do," and "You do" method of instruction to scaffold my students' learning.  During the "we do" portion of the completion of the graphic organizer, I allow them to collaborate with one another.  By the time they get to the independent practice, they know what to do.

Closure

10 minutes

Now that they have created their four square writing graphic organizer for the writing prompt, I ask them to take the next 10 minutes to use it to write your first paragraph.  We use our summary paragraph formula, which I display on the SmartBoard (see attached resource).  They write the topic sentence first, followed by the 1st detail, then the 2nd detail, 3rd detail, and a conclusion.  For homework, they will use the graphic organizer to write the remaining 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th paragraphs.  They will use the information in the box on the top left to write the 2nd paragraph, the information in the box on the top right to write the 3rd paragraph, the information in the box on the bottom right to write the 4th paragraph, and the information in the box on the bottom right to write the 5th paragraph. On tomorrow, we will continue the writing process with peer review, revising, and editing.
