Reflection: Checks for Understanding Students Apply Annotating Guidelines On Their Own - Section 2: Application


This quiz was a good opportunity for me to see the progress students have made in this area. They are quite resistant to annotating a text. Unless I make it worth a good amount of points towards their grade, they will simply not annotate, which makes it difficult for me to see if they actually know how to identify the specific concepts and literary devices I asked them to annotate. This gives me a clear picture of that because I am sure students put in a lot of effort in this quiz. As a group, they did a good job of identifying the elements in the “Juxtapose Mainstream and Indigenous Lit” chart, which is great because I expected that to be challenging. Also, I can tell that diction, repetition and figurative language make sense to them because most were able to accurately identify several examples of these. Imagery is the only literary device they struggled with. They confused it with strong language. If the language communicated something shocking, such as “Corpses for us/Blood for us” they identified it as imagery even though it does not contain adjectives or a detailed description. Such example made a strong impression in their mind and they confused that with an image. In the future, imagery is a literary device I need to clarify for them. Also, I need to set up assignments where annotating a text in advance makes the task much easier than if they haven’t so that they may clearly see the value of annotating.
