Reflection: Safety Why Did They Do That? Othello Comparitive Analysis (Day 1 of 2) - Section 4: Wrap Up and Next Steps


Today was more emotional than I anticipated. Two weeks ago, we lost a student to suicide and while many of my students didn't know him personally, the impact of a tragic event like that has a ripple effect over an entire school community. I probably should have anticipated that this might be an issue, but in my anticipation of their academic needs, I forgot to be mindful of their emotional needs as well.

Watching the death scene played very powerfully three times in a row back to back was a bit much for all of us. As such, I had to take the last few minutes of class to debrief with my kiddos and have them take some deep breaths together.

I think it is really important for students to feel safe in our learning environment. Part of that is sheltering them, but part of it comes from teaching them ways to cope with heavy or intense material. I don't know that I did a great job of this today, but I definitely learned to keep it more on my radar for upcoming activities.
