Reflection: Staircase of Complexity Multiplying by 10s: The Power of 10s (Day 1) - Section 4: The Elevator Speech


I wish someone had broken it down for me in this manner. Making that connection to powers of ten instead of just saying "this is in the tens place".

When I explain multiplication this way students seem to make more connections to this. It might also be a good place to let them know that they will need this work when you look at division.

I also, love to have students create their own work. This gives ownership but also helps support ELL and struggling learners. It allows them the chance to work at their pace and at their level of understanding.

Objective: Students Will Be Able To identify a pattern when multiplying by 10s, and then break apart a two-digit number to multiply by powers of 10 to find products.

Big Idea: By breaking apart a two-digit number students can more easily find the product.
