Reflection: Flexibility Points of Informational Text-Main Idea and Details - Section 4: Students Take A Turn


I always try to be ready and able to catch students when they have ideas that connect to background knowledge or other topics. In this teachable moment, one of my students makes a connection and recognized the bridge in the photo as soon as he turned the page. He commented that he had been there. However, he was not able to connect to an explorer picture that I showed.

Anytime a student can connect to a picture or text, it becomes a powerful strategy to boost comprehension. I want to make sure that I seize this opportunity to encourage connections. When a student goes off topic, I want to take the time to let him/her explain the connection and then bring that back to the topic. "So you went to that place. That's cool. When the explorers came, there was not bridge!"
