Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Brush Those Teeth - Section 3: Group Work


When I saw the Student Work, I realized that my student simply copied a sentence from the first page, one from a middle page, and one from the end.  I was sad because I realized that the thinking my student engaged in was simply knowledge level.  I think I did not make the task clear or provide enough modeling.  I wanted the students to analyze the first few pages and make a statement about what happened.  By summarizing each section the students would have to think deep about what is important to state about that section.  I am always trying to engage learners in higher order thinking, but I failed to make this clear.  I have got to do a better job predicting what they might do in order to guide them where I want them to go. Maybe I should have explicitly said do not copy sentences from each section.

Big Idea: Brushing your teeth has to be done in a certain order. The students connect this everyday activity to the characters, setting, and events in a story.
