Reflection: Continuous Assessment My Messy Room - Organizing with a Ten Frame - Section 4: Independent Practice and Informal Assessment


This lesson allows wonderful opportunities to observe students applying their knowledge of numbers 0-10.  I could easily observe what students were still struggling with, one-to-one correspondence or number formation.  It was interesting to note the number of students who needed some redirection to start at the top of the ten frame.  Observing someone organize objects in a ten frame does not guarantee understanding.  The students need to be given multiple opportunities for practice and the additional practice sheet included with this lesson is a fun, hands-on way to allow more time working with the concept.

Objective: Students will be able to organize and count objects using a ten frame.

Big Idea: What student doesn't have a messy room? The messy room in this lesson familiarizes students with a ten frame. It organizes items for counting and allows them to build important understanding for skip counting by 5s and 10s.
