Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Heavy Metal, It's Not your Neuron's Music! - Section 5: Extend


        As instructors we know that opportunities to revisit previous content not only strengthen students command of the information but their confidence as well. This is exactly what I hoped to capitalize on while doing this activity.  I wanted for my students to have the aha moment and think forward about where they could take their upcoming investigations while reflecting on the impact of heavy metals on the nervous system and how they could potentially observe this impact by looking for symptoms experienced by an Alzheimer's patient. Essentially, I attempted to grow students in their prediction abilities and felt that this was the best place to build this attribute. I highly recommend for teachers to capitalize on this strategy when approaching student research activities.

Unit 11: The Brain and Toxins (Drugs and Environmental)

Objective: Students will develop a model that explains how heavy metals like mercury circulate in the environment and accumulate to toxic levels in the human brain.

Big Idea: Mercury is a heavy metal that when accumulated and ingested in high quantities disrupts the Central Nervous System of humans.
