Reflection: Problem-based Approaches Free Throw Shots - Section 2: Investigation


Although the main purpose of this task is to get students thinking about a system of equations, I like how it builds by directly addressing CCSS A.REI. 10. Understand that the graph of an equation in two variables is the set of all its solutions plotted in the coordinate plane, often forming a curve (which could be a line). This is a standard that I think often gets left out of math instruction. In this task, students find combinations of shots that both girls could make, thereby building their understanding that the graph is the set of all the solutions plotted in the coordinate plain. Then they do the same with the second equation, and then finally think about both lines as related to each other.
