Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding The Case of the Missing Secret Message - Section 4: Solve The Mystery: An Inquiry


Scientific inquiry is one method to develop conceptual understanding. The NSTA defines scientific inquiry as "the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and propose explanations based on the evidence derived from their work. Scientific inquiry also refers to the activities through which students develop knowledge and understanding of scientific ideas, as well as an understanding of how scientists study the natural world."

As my students experience a guided inquiry, teacher-lead inquiry, or even student-led inquiry, I want them to grow skills such as observing, gathering data, manipulating variables, drawing conclusions, and interpreting results. It is a way to provide context to the concepts and understand the natural world. A scientific inquiry provides opportunity for students to grow their thinking, share their ideas, and reflect on the process.

The Case of the Missing Secret Message

Unit 8: Matter and Atoms
Lesson 11 of 12

Objective: SWBAT read a fictional science mystery to observe how acid/base chemistry can be used to create "invisible ink." SWBAT perform an experiment and use deductive reasoning to solve the mystery.

Big Idea: Who did it? Solve the mystery by applying knowledge of acids and bases. Students investigate by creating "invisible ink," making observations, and writing a conclusion.
