Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation Acids vs Bases - Section 2: Explore

What is a trade book? According to Merriam-Webster, a trade book (noun) is a book that is published for and sold to the general public; book intended for general readership.

I love to incorporate trade books in my lesson planning. I weave trade books into the fabric of the learning. Trade books are rich with interesting information and usually have fantastic illustrations. Teaching Science Through Trade Books enhances my curriculum.

Trade books

  • engage the learner in the content.
  • bring focus to the lesson.
  • improve student reading and vocabulary skills.
  • when used in a read aloud provide many benefits to students.

Trade books create a culture for reading and learning. In my classroom, I have bookshelves with a variety of science trade books for students to read in their free time or check out. Trade books bring joy to reading and intrinsic motivation to learn and improve.

The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) publishes a yearly list of Outstanding Science Trade Books for Students K-12. Check it out. Read the list. Incorporate a few trade books into your curriculum this year!
