Reflection: Discourse and Questioning Body System Review - Section 3: Explain


Why and how questions are essential to getting to the heart of student understanding concerning body systems.  Students may be able to memorize the various organs of body systems and the functions of those organs, but they must demonstrate an understanding of the material in order to answer why and how questions.  For instance, my students know that the circulatory system transports blood throughout the body, but by asking why it transports blood, the students demonstrate their understanding of the items that are transported in blood and how they impact the body.  As important as why and how questions are, it is equally as important to encourage students to persevere in answering the question.  Once I ask a student a question, I stick with them and assist them until they are able to answer the question.  This can sometimes take awhile, but it is worth it because it helps to build both the student's knowledge and the student's self esteem.
