Reflection: Checks for Understanding The Story of the Three Little Pigs & the Nature of Science (#1 of 2) - Section 2: Anticipatory Set ("Hook")

At this juncture, I was looking for a definition for each underlined term and an attempt to connect some of them to each other. If so, then this would be scored 3. Any extra effort or depth of answer scores a 4 a response shy of this mark would score a 2 or, if very lacking, a 1.

Having "pinged" my students for their initial understanding of the interrelationships between data, hypotheses, theories, and laws, here is the break down for one of my classes.

"Plus" mark /4/ Exceeds Standard = 2 students

"Check-Plus" mark /3/ Meets Standard = 0 students

"Check" mark /2/ Approaching Standard = 11 students

"Check-minus" mark /1/ Well Below Standard = 9 students

"Minus" mark /0/ Minimal to no response = 2 students

Therefore 2/24 did not meet standard which indicates that we have some work to do!

Please refer to the following sample of a 4, 3, and 2 response: Nature of Science Entry Task

The Story of the Three Little Pigs & the Nature of Science (#1 of 2)

Unit 6: 6) Exploring Change ("The Theory of Natural Selection")
Lesson 5 of 15

Objective: Students will be able to describe and apply a mental model in order to correctly understand the nature of theories and supporting data, hypotheses, and laws.

Big Idea: Scientific theories are built from various supporting evidences and, like the Three Little Pigs' construction experience, some are like straw and stick, while the strongest are made of brick!
