Reflection: Complex Tasks Material Engineers Part 2 - Section 1: NGSS Connections and Class Preparation


In these 2 labs the students cover many concepts, material properties, identifying criteria to test, developing procedures that allow the criteria to be measured.

I think I could create depth with this breadth of lessons (Material Engineers Part 1 and 2) by introducing one material property at a time. The kiddos would learn how to identify criteria and explore creating a measurable procedure, gaining confidence and expertise as the format became more predictable.

Overall my students did a fantastic job of meeting the lab requirements, but I want them to be able to identify when they are approaching a problem as a scientist. This takes time and deliberate planning.

So, next time each lab will focus on establishing criteria, developing measurable procedures and testing only one property for the selected materials.

Objective: SWBAT test and explain which material demonstrates the selected property the best, based on measurable data.

Big Idea: Material Engineers use measurable procedures (fair test) to test materials for absorbency, hardness and flexibility.
