3-2-1 Exit Slip

An effective way of ending a lesson is having students fill out an exit ticket, like a 3-2-1. This kind of ticket has students’ process concepts within the lesson, share their thinking and understanding, and make connections to their own lives or ask questions.  3-2-1 exit slips help students structure their thinking as they reflect and summarize what they have learned about a particular concept/topic. It helps a teacher to identify areas of the lesson students understand and/or misunderstand so intervention or modified instruction can be put in place. Exit tickets are a valuable tool to help increase student achievement.

I like using an exit ticket at the end of the lesson because it gives students a chance to self-assess their learning and really think about parts of the lesson they understand. This ticket hold students accountable for synthesizing the lesson’s concepts and lets me check-in with students informally so I can determine areas of the lesson that may confuse students and/or areas I can develop students use of higher order thinking skills. In addition, I get feedback on all my students because everyone participates and can use it to make instructional decisions. 

I use a 3-2-1 exit slip in this lesson on mixtures to find out if students understood the differences between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. I found students were able to show me their understanding by giving me accurate examples of each kind in their own lives. I asked them examples they are familiar with in their own lives to help them recognize the relevance of the lesson.  I found they were able to give me examples from their own lives, indicating they understood the differences between heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. I used this information to move onto the next lesson that has students investigating more on why some materials combine as homogeneous mixtures.
