Reflection: Complex Tasks Test a Dam - Section 3: Construction and Testing


As students observe the water moving through their stream tables, I ask them to consider how the design or materials might be revised to lead to better results in a future test. At the end of the day's lesson, I ask students to work with their teams to create a list of possible revisions. If time allows, I provide the students with the opportunity to revise their design and retest their dam on subsequent days. Spending two or three days on the lab is difficult due to time constraints, but it is well worth the time. By having the opportunity to revise their design multiple times, students gain a better understanding of the cyclical nature of the engineering design process. In real-life projects, designs are continually monitored, evaluated, and modified to improve results.
