Reflection: Routines and Procedures Test a Dam - Section 4: Sharing

I establish a procedure for discussing student work early on in the school year. Before engaging in any discussion where a critique of student work may occur, such as this post-lab share-out session, I review my expectations for student discussions. First, I remind students that all comments are directed towards student work, not people. This helps students to focus on the engineering task, not fellow students. Second, I remind students that all comments must be constructive. Critique of ones design can be hurtful if the comments focus on design flaws. I ask students to direct their comments to potential improvements and successes. Finally, I remind students that the goal of a critique is to help students revise their work and that this is best accomplished by asking good questions instead of stating opinions. These three discussion guidelines help keep our class discussions positive and productive.
