Reflection: Modeling Food Webs - Section 2: Explore

This activity requires patience, a lot of it.  Students are excited to be throwing the ball of yarn. They have the tendency to be loud and forget they are in class.

You will need to remind them that this is a scientific model that they are constructing. Practicing the behavior expectations ahead of time helps students to remember the desired behavior after the "fun" begins. Interactive modeling works well for this - ask a student to work with you to demonstrate how to toss the ball of yarn, and then ask all of your students to tell and discuss:

  • What does this look like?
  • What does it sound like?
  • What does it feel like?

The work is worth it, because it is finished, students have a physical image of a food web, demonstrating the interconnectedness of the ecosystem.
