Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation CAPSTONE: Feeding 9 billion through sustainable farm design (2 of 3) - Section 3: PROTOTYPING: Constraints and Design


Many students prefer to develop drawings on paper.  A large subgroup of my students, however, prefers edtech solutions that allow for graphic design.  These are often the same students that like the design aesthetics of digital infographics and graphing platforms such as  One tool that students tried for this project is Canva.  Canva touts itself as an easy graphic design software tool that allow anybody to become a designer quickly.  Canva is one of many products that makes graphic design accessible. It just happens to be the one that I chose because of its attractive design interface.

One advantage of Canva is that is meets students' need for doing "real" graphic design work. This is a significant need for some students; they will refuse to do any kind of paper design because they believe that graphic design is a computer-based profession. Regardless of the accuracy of this idea, an edtech tool that allows students to meets the requirements of this urban farm design project is a benefit.

One disadvantage is that for students that are unfamiliar with graphic design software interfaces, the learning curve can be steep. Teachers must exercise judgment.  If a student wants to use Canva but is clearly not adept at the technology interface, 15 minutes should be a hard boundary for that student to demonstrate an ability to use the tool.  Otherwise, students will spend precious time trying to learn an edtech tool instead of contributing to the design process.

Objective: In addition to the objectives from part one, by the end of part two of the Food CAPSTONE experience, student will be able to 1) explain constraints impacting potential solutions to problems posed by the global food system and ideate solutions within these constraints and 2) design a prototype sustainable farm as a solution to specific problems posed by industrial agriculture and a growing human population.

Big Idea: The human population will approach 9 billion by 2050, but our current food system was not designed to sustainably feed so many. How might we apply our understanding of agricultural methods to feed 9 billion people in an environmentally sustainable manner?
