Reflection: Online Resources Does McDonalds Have a Farm? (1 of 2) - Section 3: EXPLORE: Agriculture

The content from this lesson comes from a Dartmouth developed edX MOOC (Massive Open Online Course).  MOOCs can be a wonderful resource for a blended classroom; they are professionally developed content presentations.  The key to effective MOOC integration is to carefully curate content.  MOOC course are most often stand alone college courses that are not accessible to all high school students.  Teachers need to very carefully vet MOOC content for accessibility and alignment with lesson objectives.  Sometimes it is possible to find a MOOC that has exactly the right content at an accessible level.

Even so, however, additional differentiation need to happen.  The best MOOC is, at best, only going to be partially successful for a classroom of students.  Teachers are wise to use MOOCs as a starting point for content curation, but are foolish to stop at that.  “Shadow” resources that supplement MOOC material are essential.  Readings to support videos, diagrams to support readings, songs to supplement readings, and so on, will be necessary.  This process is time consuming.  However, this process ultimately frees a teacher to best support student learning instead of ineffectivey taking class time as a sage on the stage.

Does McDonalds Have a Farm? (1 of 2)

Unit 5: Food (biosphere and geosphere)
Lesson 11 of 24

Objective: Students will be able to 1) reflect on the connections between agriculture and ecosystems; 2) describe the health, environmental, social, and economic impacts of agriculture; 3) work independently and collaboratively to develop an evidence-based answer to a personalized guiding question.

Big Idea: Much of what we eat comes from a “food industrial complex.” How might we define the costs and benefits of this system through comparison of agricultural techniques?
