Reflection: Trust and Respect Using Academic Language - Section 2: Analyzing Their Own Words


This is a group of earnest students who are interested in learning, and I felt that in this lesson. I probably wouldn't do a lesson like this so early in the semester if I didn't already have good relationships with all the students from last year, because they might feel more insecure about having their work as part of a lesson in this manner.  But with this group it was a safe space, and they get the idea.   With each example, more students participated, and the examples they re-wrote on their own suggested to me that they were getting the message.  The more formal assessment in the next segment will provide more data regarding this point, since they are answering a similar prompt regarding "War" again to practice using more specific academic discourse.
