Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Finding the Biggest Dog Pen - Section 3: Student Practice

When reflecting upon this lesson, I realize that providing students with a string was one of the most powerful experiences! It was so important for students to prove that rectangles can have the same perimeter, but different areas!

In this video, you'll see students creatively cutting the string to exactly 24 inches: Cutting String

Here, you'll see students checking the perimeter of each dog pen Checking Perimeter

I was reminded how powerful hands-on learning can be. Maybe I should put a purple perimeter sting around the rectangle on our perimeter poster to help students remember that perimeter is the distance around a polygon!

Finding the Biggest Dog Pen

Unit 14: Area & Perimeter
Lesson 16 of 19

Objective: SWBAT determine the largest dog pen that can be made when given a specific amount of fencing.

Big Idea: Students will find, compare, and analyze all possible dog pen arrangements that can be created when given a specific amount of fencing.
