Fast Pass

Recall, Reactivate, Review

I created the Fast Pass strategy as an active way to engage students in reviewing key concepts, vocabulary, and/or content from a previous lesson or to wrap up a lesson. It is a formative way of assessing what students know and understand, identify misconceptions, and apply what they have learned.

I have students create one whole circle around the room and have them pass a ball to in a circular motion.  While this is happening, I set a timer for an unknown amount of time. When it goes off, the person holding the ball answers the question. If they struggle, I let them use our phone a friend method to help them with answering the question. If they use a phone a friend, and the information the friend provided is accurate, I ask them to repeat what the person said. This requires them to be attentive to the response and an active listener. If the response is long and complex, I have the phone a friend slow it down and chunk their response. Using the timer provides some wait time which is beneficial to students who need to a little extra time to recall information.Before putting Fast Pass into action, I model every part of it with the students. From forming a circle, to passing the ball, listening while others answer a question, the role of the phone a friend, etc.  Modeling helps set the expectations and purpose of this activity.

Fast Pass is used at the start of this lesson to reactivate student knowledge about processes that change Earth's surfaces as they are expected to use them in today's activity of making rocks. My students really enjoy this activity as they ask to play it often.

Objective: SWBAT identify the processes that cause rocks to change.

Big Idea: Students will use processes like weathering, compaction, heat and pressure, and melting to simulate how rocks change from one form to another.
