Reflection: Parent Communication Learning about the Sun - Section 4: Closing

At the close of this lesson, I have the students partner up and then share some facts that they learned during the lesson.  The students enjoy the opportunity to recap their learning with a friend and it helps the students prepare to share their learning with family when they get home at the end of the day.

Summarizing information is an important science skill for students to develop and this skill also carries over into literacy learning and other content areas.  It is difficult to teach students at the kindergarten level how to summarize scientific readings.  This little activity is a great way for students to practice summarizing, even if they are not able to write.  Having the students complete a spoken summary is great scaffolding for written summaries that will come in future years.  This activity also encourages students to engage their families in their learning which is a definite bonus.

I was a little frustrated at first when I started having my students engage in this activity.  They needed lots of prompting and coaching to be successful.  Now it is the end of the year and I am so impressed with my students' ability to summarize their learning.  I will continue to have my students participate in this spoken summary activity in the future.
