Reflection: Organizational Systems The Great Pacific Garbage Patch - Section 5: Evaluate


One of the easiest ways I learned to create and organize anecdotal notes came from one of my college professors many years ago. While she intended it for primary early elementary students, I have found it is easily applicable to any age group or purpose within the classroom.

Every day that I intend to take notes or when I am observing a particular student (or group of students) for a specific purpose (such as IEP evidence, etc), I carry around a clipboard which has 2 or 3 sheets of 2x4 mailing labels attached to it. When I want to take an anecdotal record on a student, I write the child's name and the date in the top left corner. I jot down SG (small group), WC (whole class), E (experiment) in the right corner. I fill the label with notes regarding what I am seeing.  For example, "Reads with fluency but is unable to summarize the text; lacks comprehension." 

Another example might be, "Discusses topic with understanding, able to use terminology correctly and apply to other situations."  I can record an entire class on just 2 sheets of labels. I wait until later in the day or week to peel the labels off and attach them to an anecdotal record sheet I keep on each child. Try to record at least one observation on every child per week. I am observing them all the time anyway; this process turns those observations into evidence I can refer to throughout the year. It only takes seconds, but it allows me to build a very comprehensive picture of each students' abilities.
