Would Your Animal Survive There? Day 2

Objective: SWBAT: Determine whether an animal can survive in a different environment than its own based on its inherited traits.
During this second day of the introductory lesson on adaptations, I wanted my student to see the big picture about the concept of adaptations, primarily as it relates to the DCI (Disciplinary Core Idea), that the environment can also affects the traits that an organism develops. I use a power point to help guide the students and the lesson. The PowerPoint, Could your animal survive?, also helped my students stay on task and know exactly what was expected next.
Each Group was given 2 envelopes, the first with animals to color and the second with a habitat that corresponds to those animals.
Once again, I reminded my students that the animals had to be colored realistically.
For this lesson, the students had to state a claim and then give evidence to validate the claim. This time there were four habitats used. I purposely did this in order for the students to compare some habitats that may not be as different as the first two they previously worked with.
The PowerPoint helped guide them through the lesson,as well as derive an understanding that assesses student’s ability to utilize, compose, communicate, and evaluate the function of real world evidence-based exploration manner that also included setting time constraints for the coloring and cutting of the animals. Once the animals were completed, I had them open the envelope that contained the habitat. They had to explain as a group why their particular animal could survive in that environment. What features, or inherited traits, did the animals have that would make living/existing in that environment possible, would that habitat work? I created a focus page, Is This Habitat A Good Fit?, to assist them in this process. They then traded habitats with the next group. This is when they really had to work together and use accountable talk to build on each other's ideas, as well as to decide what features their animal possesses that could help it survive in that new environment.
During this portion of the lesson I really wanted my students to focus on the guiding questions of the lesson : Does the variation of characteristics help an animal or organism survive? Will a change in habitat or environment affect the survival of the animal? First, they had placed the animal on the actual Habitat, then on the new habitat. I created a includes sentence frames, the students are better able to explain their claims using academic vocabulary and in a scientific format.
Having them work out the "what ifs" is what made this lesson a success. They laid out their claims and then discussed the pros and cons here is a sample of a completed Would it Survive Focus Page.
It was an excellent way to introduce the topic of adaptations and what it means to be able to adapt to a new habitat or environment.
Class Discussion/ Wrap up
Because this second lesson had a more detailed focus page than the first day, the students were able to use the academic language along with the AccountableTalkSentenceStemsandStarters to help frame their ideas based on what they noticed and validate their claims using evidence. They were really able to understand the DCI, that characteristic variations do play a major role when deciding if an organism will be able to survive in a different environment.
