Reflection: Grappling with Complexity Transcription with a Bling! - Section 3: Guided Practice - Translating Treasures


DNA transcription and translation is an abstract concept that many students struggle with so I needed to find a creative strategy to assist my students to visualize each of these steps.  Students have a great time creating their bracelet models and through the fun experience practice transcription and translation of DNA into the correct amino acids.  At the end of activity, students leave class with a memento to remind them of the multi-steps of transcription and translation.

Objective: SWBAT transcribe and translate DNA sequences to determine the role of these processes in the creation of protein molecules.

Big Idea: Fashionistas beware- this lesson will put the bling into Biology as students create protein-inspired personalized jewelry based on DNA sequences!
