Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Planning my solution - Section 3: Explore

As the students were working I noticed they were spacing the equipment too close together. They were also drawing it too small. So, first graders do not really understand the scale is 1 foot= 1 square, nor do they understand the size of the equipment. So, I simply showed them. I said, "So, if you have a swing set that is three boxes tall it would be this high." Then I would put my hand at about three feet. This give them a visual. Then I said, "Do you think that is a good height for a swing set?" Then I listened, and we decided to make the swing set about six feet or six boxes tall.

I reminded students as they were working that the equipment needs to be spaced out. Some of the students adjusted their work, and moved the equipment. Here is an example of the student work that was changed after our discussion: student work.
