Reflection: Coherence Identifying Algebraic Expressions - Section 2: Mini Lesson

After I completed the lesson with my class, I realized that there was still some confusion about the components of an algebraic expression.  My students were asking a lot of "what if" questions.  For example, "What if there is a decimal in front of the variable?"

I decided to engage students in a quick activity before moving on to the group work.  I handed out an index card to each student.  I instructed them to write an original algebraic expression on their card.  They then traded cards with someone in their group.  I instructed them to identify the components of the expression and write them on the back of the card.  Afterwards, they gave the index back to the original person to verify their answer.

This activity produced a lot of student discussion since several students used decimals and fractions in their expressions.  The discussions led to a better understanding of algebraic expressions.
