Reflection: Checks for Understanding Products and Properties - Section 5: Some Materials Have Many Uses


In math students have been conducting surveys and creating bar graphs or pictographs. I am using the data from the product and material lesson to assess how well the students have mastered building a graph on their own.

I project the tally marks, "These are our class results when you looked at products to discover which materials are used in most products. Today you will use this data to create a bar graph."

Throughout the year, the kiddos have written conclusions on their own, with partners or we have created conclusions as a whole class. I would like to see what they will produce individually in a more formal setting.

After you make the bar graph, you will write a conclusion about what you learned about the most used material and explain your reasons why you think this material is used most in the products that you looked at. You all gave some great reasons which are listed here. This list and your 'conclusion anchor chart' will help you write your conclusion."

This assessment will be given in the morning and students will be given an hour to complete the assessment.

I will be assessing:

- did the student include all the parts of the bar graph

- the conclusion summarizes the bar graph

- reasons explain why certain materials were used most often in products

- the conclusion refers to the properties of the materials to support their reasons 

- elements of the conclusion anchor chart are addressed

Objective: SWBAT identify the predominant materials in selected products and explain how those materials support the function of the product.

Big Idea: So many objects, so few materials! Scientists identify materials used in products. Then create a tally chart to discover the materials used most frequently.
