Reflection: Intrinsic Motivation How Does Our Body Maintain 100 Trillion Cells? - Section 4: Connecting the Learning


Students are in awe after viewing the Bonnie Bassler video about how bacteria cells talk to each other. This is obviously new and unexpected knowledge.

I share the video at the end of this lesson so students have something beyond our scope of study to ponder. My goal for students is to ask the next question. No lesson should be thought of as, "Hey, I am glad that is over." I want my students to know that their knowledge is the tip of the iceberg. There is so much more to learn. Scientist think we know less than 1% about how the cell works. 

For my students, showing this film at the end of class was a successful strategy. They asked questions about human cells and can we send messages to cells to intercept that chemical signals? Wow, what if we could I am thinking. I hope one of my students discovers how to stop bacterial growth without the use of drugs!

Objective: SWBAT explain the growth rate of cells.

Big Idea: We have as many as 100 trillion cells in our body. We lose as many as 30,000 skin cells an hour. How does our body maintain such a large number of cells?
