Reflection: Pacing Fat in Food - Section 2: Independent Practice


In this lab, students are required to test both liquid and food samples using a paper bag square. In order to complete the lab in the allotted time, I ask students to put liquid samples on the paper bags first, and then conduct their food tests. The liquids have the time to dry on the paper bag while students conduct the food tests. The students can then revisit the paper bag squares with liquid samples to read the results upon finishing their work with food. This also minimizes the amount of supplies being used at any one time.

Students also frequently need help with rubbing food samples on the paper bag squares. I model this process prior to the lab so that each student knows the correct procedures. This activity can be tiring, so I encourage teamwork among student groups.

Big Idea: Fats contain usable energy, however, some fats can be harmful to human health.
