Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Volcanoes - Helpful or Harmful? Prove it! - Section 3: Explore

Most children and adults have misconceptions about volcanoes.  Many people think of their destructive side, and not how they can also be helpful. Farmers love planting crops in the ash since it provides needed nutrients.  Also, over years, volcanoes can create new land.  The Hawaiian islands are an example.  Surtsey is our newest island.  It was created just over 50 years ago. In 1963 a volcano erupted in the sea near Iceland to make this brand-new island. Later in the explanation section, I will tell them about these islands.  For now, I want them to explore the idea without intervention.
