## Reflection: Complex Tasks Unit Assessment: Conic Sections - Section 1: Unit Assessment

When I graded this exam, I was struck by how many errors were algebraic in nature and not related to the conceptual understanding of conics. For example, many students made an error while completing the square to convert from general form to standard form of a conic. Thus, when I asked for the coordinates of vertices or foci, their answers were incorrect because they had the wrong a and b values. However, their coordinates were correct for the standard equation that they had.

In the future I think I need to supplement the chapter with a few more examples of just the algebraic techniques so students have plenty of opportunity to review this algebraic concept that becomes important in this unit.
