Reflection: Adjustments to Practice Communication Devices ~ Revising Plans - Section 3: Exploration ~ the wave crest


This year, my students told me in science discussion that they like designing devices independently rather than in a group.  In this way, they can truly get their ideas on paper, without any arguments or needing to compromise with group members.  However, this means that students would miss the collaboration piece that is essential in today's workplace.

After the extending presentations of the initial plans, students went back to make revisions and draw new and improved plans.  As much as they liked working independently, they wanted to make the revisions together!  

Here you see how my students still worked on individual plans, but also were discussing and evaluating with their neghbors as they went.

Also, many students were absent.  Rather than having them create plans from scratch, instead they worked with a friend who wanted a partner.  

Overall, these changes were precipitated by student feedback and led to greater student choice.

Objective: SWBAT plan a tool to communicate over a distance utilizing light and/or sound.

Big Idea: The best laid plans... for finishing a great unit! Students improve their plans, and solve our problem.
