Reflection: Connection to Prior Knowledge Macros in our Stream System - Section 1: Warm Up


In order to engage in macroinvertebrate identification, students must have a base of knowledge about characteristics of macros. To help students build this knowledge and remember it over time, I use a classroom chant. The classroom chant has words and gestures to help students remember the three common types of pollution senstive macroinvertebrates; mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies. The chant uses several senses (touch, hearing, sight) and physical motions. This reinforces key content knowledge and vocabulary in a way that is both fun and developmentally appropriate.
