Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding Behavioral and Structural Adaptations - Section 1: Introduction


I begin nearly all of my science lessons with a focus question.  The focus question is like the lens I want my students to view all of the activities of the day through.  I try to phrase these questions in such a way as to include the most higher order thinking possible.  In this lesson, I could have asked "What are two types of adaptations?" but by asking "What structures and behaviors help an animal survive in its environment?", I created a situation where students must categorize or classify information as they read, not just memorize or locate.
