Reflection: Complex Tasks Writing About Recreational Users and Dams - Section 2: Independent Writing

Choosing details from the notes to include as details in the stakeholder paragraph can be difficult for students. To help student select appropriate details, I use one of the folowing strategies:

1: Use a highlighter to pick out 4-5 key reasons from the note-taking page. Select the 3 to use by reading each highlighted reason with the topic sentence to see which make the most sense.

2: With a partner, review notes and star key details that might help support the opinion statement in the paragraph.

3: Read all ideas from your note-page aloud (Using a Toobaloo can reduce noise during this activity). Select the details that are the most meaningful to you.

4: Share out details and compile a class list on chart paper. Select details as a class.

I choose a strategy based on the time of year and the writing skill level of my students. This year, my students were able to highlight key details independently and were very successful in paragraph writing. In previous years, I have guided the process more by using chart paper to record details and help students make their selections.
