Reflection: Writing Across the Disciplines Figuring out Friction - Section 4: Analogy Closure


The analogy prompt closure strategy is one of my favorite to use because it shows the creativity my students already have. I'm so used to seeing my students as almost strictly computational thinkers, so I try to balance that with some opportunities to creatively write on occasion. It might not seem like 1 sentence would give them such an opportunity, but using analogies fosters imagination.

The AP Physics 1 exam puts such an emphasis on justification of solutions, that an analogy prompt closure allows students to have a little fun with their physics. The responses always amaze me (as you'll see in the closure section of this lesson), yet they also provide great insight into how my students feel about this activity. I could evidence their learning with a more concrete and traditional closure, but diversity in assessments only help my students be more successful.
