Reflection: Developing a Conceptual Understanding The Layers of Soil - Section 3: Activity

Sometimes, I tend to forget that I work with first graders! When we are making models, it just makes sense to me (the adult) what the model represents...but it is not always so to a six or seven year old. It is so important to have conversations with students to make sure they understand what they are making a model of! Listen as I reason with a student about the soil profile model. In the end, she understood the model - but it took a while! It reminded me to really make sure that I do not just monitor the activity, but really engage in conversation with students as they work, asking them questions like, "What does this represent?" and "What does this model show?" so that they have an opportunity to articulate what the model means.
