Reflection: Performance Tasks Give and Get-Crazy Compost - Section 1: Hook


I’ve written before on the value of simplicity.  Kindergarten students don’t need complicated curriculum to get the point across.  Despite owning this philosophy, I was afraid that this lesson might be too simple.  Compost..on it’s own?  Really?  Yes, really!  What better way to model Earth stewardship than to design a simple performance task that shows our students a simple way to give back.  Many of my lessons highlight active ways that we can use Science to make our own positive contributions.  That’s exactly why I took this unit on soil and broke it down to such detailed elements...the last of which was compost.  During this lesson, I talked about an uncle who showed me how a lowly fava bean plant adds an essential element of nitrogen to the soil.  I used this story to illustrate how Nature itself takes care of it’s own.  When humans either use up those resources or contribute to it’s destruction, the responsible thing to do is to make it right.  I explained it to the class in terms of balance.  As responsible citizens, we owe it to the future to do our part to maintain this compost heap at a time.
