Reflection: High Quality Task Making Model Fossils - Section 3: Activity

Using models with any age group in science is necessary, and in first grade it can be so much fun. The important part comes with the conversation, though. My students have gotten used to me asking them "Is this a model? Or is this the real thing?" because they need to know! In this activity, it was so obvious between the specimens that I brought of real fossils versus some clay and dried pasta as to which were the models and  which were real. However, it is not always that easy. Therefore, having those conversations when it is easy allows me to use the vocabulary and allow students to feel successful in the science classroom. Then, when we get into more complex science topics, they will have more self-efficacy and perhaps go out on a limb a little farther!
