Reflection: Positive Reinforcement Understanding the Structure of the Neuron! - Section 4: Explain


     In today's classroom, students are more consumed with being right than the greater academic payoff of engaging in discourse and development of inquiry skills. In the exploration activity and in this vain, I noted that students were more comfortable with committing to an incorrect verbal response than to a permanent record in their lab books. This was particularly noted by their non-annotated illustrations of the neurons prior to being presented with the correct terminology. (See student examples) To rectify this fear, I encouraged students to revisit their illustrations and either physically label or to verbally identify/explain the parts and functions of the neuron explored in the explanation video. I noticed that even with the greater chance of being correct, post video (when labeling), most students opted to talk it through with their partners and then the class. No matter the route taken, students were verbally rewarded for their efforts and continued to be verbally active throughout the remainder of the lesson as a result!
