Reflection: Shared Expectations Exploring Coal - Section 1: Engage


I deliberately build speaking and listening skills in my students by helping them to respond to one another in discussions. I use Accountable Talk sentence stems as a strategy for students to use to help scaffold the responses they can offer one another. I use the sentence stems so frequently, the students begin to learn how to complete their own responses. 

In this activity the students created their own stem responses and used them in the discussion. As you watch the movie, it is evident that the responses are not yet natural but it is a skill I am working toward. I explain that it doesn't feel natural yet and that's okay.
