Reflection: Real World Applications What is Fracking? - Section 3: Explain

This strategy of looking at a big picture and bringing it closer to home helps students make a connection to real life. The History Channel movie in the first section of the lesson discusses fracking in South Dakota. The article about fracking in Illinois helps brings the idea to our state and creates the scenario that it may be good for our state economically. The authentic argument my students eventually write revolves around the economic and environmental trade-offs of using oil and natural gas. The students responded emotionally to the idea of fracking and I felt they used evidence and statistics in their summaries effectively.
