Reflection: Class Novel Introduction -Cinder - Section 2: Independent Work


Although it is time consuming, I chose to use audio and share the story together for several reasons. Of course research shows that listening to the story helps with fluency, but it also levels the playing field in my classroom.  I have students reading on a college level and students reading on a 2nd grade level.  I need to create an environment where they can all feel successful and understand what is going on in the story we are discussing.

Furthermore, this shared experience can be brought back out each time I need to give an example this year.

Listening to the story together...hanging on the words when something intense is happening... holding our breathe together -it is a powerful way to build community.
