Reflection: Diverse Entry Points Sequences Gallery Walk (Day 1 of 2) - Section 2: Mini Lesson: Function Rules vs. Recursive Rules


When I teach this lesson, students are still new to making sense of geometric sequences.  Last year, I realized that I might have been piling on a little bit too much new information by asking students to distinguish between arithmetic and geometric sequences, AND having them write functions rules and recursive rules for both.

So this year, I changed my delivery a little bit.  On this, the first day of the gallery walk, I decided to review with students how to distinguish between arithmetic and geometric functions, how to reliably determine what the common difference or common ratio is, and how to write function rules.  Then, I pointed to the "Recursive Rule" column of the chart, and said, "Tomorrow, I'm going to show you how to write recursive rules," before giving students time to get started on the Gallery Walk.

This move took some pressure off students to apply a lot of new knowledge at once, and it gave kids a chance to be familiar with the sequences in the Gallery Walk before using those sequences to write recursive rules.  It also built some anticipation, which is no small thing: students were curious about this whole recursive rule thing, and looked forward to learning more about it the next day.  Any day we can provide a coming-attraction of what's to come, we should!

Unit 8: Linear and Exponential Functions
Lesson 3 of 19

Objective: SWBAT distinguish between arithmetic sequences and geometric sequences. They will also be able to write explicit formulas and recursive rules to describe each kind of sequence.

Big Idea: Use a Gallery Walk to turn the tedium of a worksheet into an opportunity to interact throughout the classroom space.
